It’s true: some modern worship songs are shallow. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do new songs. I mean, some old songs are pretty bad, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do old songs, right?
Worship style is near and dear to the hearts of God’s people. I love people who prefer traditional worship and have had many experiences of encountering God through traditional expressions of worship. I’ve also come across some boring, old, thoughtless traditional services. Without a doubt not all contemporary music is great and not all contemporary services offer robust liturgy and theology. However, I’ve also had some incredible experiences of the presence of God in more contemporary settings.
Being passionate about this topic, I wanted to add my voice to the conversation. Here are 3 reasons we need great, thoughtful, contemporary music, and some steps we can take as church leaders…
As Eric points out, we shouldn’t indiscriminately add new music to our worship sets, but with thoughtful evaluation, we can and should add new songs to our catalog.
